Logger Education
WFCA offers different courses around the West where loggers and forest operators learn best practices and obtain professional credits through their statewide loggers association.
In 2025, WFCA was awarded a Wood Innovations Grant from the United States Forest Service for an Entry-Level Logger Training program. This course will provide a stepping stone for those with little to no skills in logging into their first job in the sector.
Steep Slope Logging
Logging technology and set up is changing. Historically, the steep slopes were only logged by cable, skylines, and traditional methods using yarders. Through advances in technology, more options are offered that get the job done safer, faster, and in some cases, more economical.
Formerly called Skyline Layout, Management and Logging Safety, this Steep Slope Logging course covers Guy Lines, carriage options, tethered logging practices, cable strengths, and much more.
This year’s Steep Slope Logging training will be June 10-11 in Sweet Home, OR.

Entry-Level Logger Training
This 6-week program is scheduled to start in late June 2026 (~June 22nd). It will take place in the North Willamette Valley, within 1 hour of Estacada, OR.
Anyone 18 years and older with a sincere interest and desire to gain skills in logging is welcome to participate. Spots are available!
For those willing to travel or already living in the region, this is a great opportunity to get those first few weeks of on-the-job training out of the way before hitting the needs of a high production company.
The program costs $2000 per participant for the 6 weeks; however, we expect to be able cover some to all program costs.
Some of the funds are scholarships through different foundations which may require participants to fill out an application.
The program will provide hard hats and gloves that participants can keep. Particpants will need to provide their own sturdy boots and thick pants (denim or canvas).
At this time, we are attempting to secure on-site housing and transportation for participants. Please do not let lack of nearby housing or transportation be a barrier to applying. We will work with you to try to come up with suitable arrangements.
To register for the program, click here and apply by 5/15.
