The Variable Probability Sampling course is offered as a service to foresters yearly during OSU spring break. Thecourseissuitableforrelativebeginnersaswellas those with experience who like to brush up on the principles and up-to-date computation techniquesusinghandcalculators andmicrocomputers.Fieldexercisesusingbothtechniques are an important part of thecourse.
Two popular methods of timber cruising will be covered in detail: Variable-plot sampling and 3-P sampling (Probability, Proportional to Prediction).
The 2026 spring course will be March 23-27. Instructors are Jim Kiser and Kim Iles.
